 The massive size of many of the supposed crinoid stems which have been collected from Salthill Quarry raises the question of their function. Many stems are encircled by a girdle of cirri which supported the roots. Other stems carry the cirri-like projections on one side of the stem perhaps indicating that the crinoid felt obliged to rest in horizontal mode - maybe as a protection against storms or perhaps to attack alternative food sources!
