Flow-banded Rhyolite from Iceland

Flow-banded Rhyolite : Iceland

Ropy Lava: Iceland

Summary:
Rhyolites are silica-rich acid lavas. They are typically light in colour, relatively light in weight and frequently have a 'flinty' appearance. They are often brecciated or flow banded - a reflection of the very viscous nature of the acid magma.
