Serpentinite

© Craven & Pendle Geological Society

Lands End, Cornwall

Summary:
This is an attractive oily looking green to black fine-grained rock that can be scatched easily with a knife.  It is composed almost completely of serpentine-group minerals, e.g. antigorite, lizardite, chrysolite.  It is formed by the late-stage hydrothermal alteration of ultramafic rocks such as peridotite and picrites.  It does make an attractive ornament when calved.
