Saint
Nicholas (sv Mikuláš)

The church of sv Mikuláš
towers above the whole of Malá Strana. It was built in the
Baroque style in 1702 by Christoph Dientzenhofer, a German
immigrant from a dynasty of Bavarian architects.
Although the outside facade appears
plain the inside is indeed spectacular. The
fresco in the nave was done by Johann Lukas Kracker and is one of
the largest paintings in Europe, covering an area of 1500 square
metres and portraying some of the amazing feats of Saint
Nicholas. Apart from his role of Santa Claus he is depicted
here performing the following deeds:
a) Rescuing sailors in
distress.
b) Saving women from
prostitution by throwing them bags of gold.
c) Reprieving from death 3
unjustly condemned men.
